Gimli, Manitoba

Gimli is a lakeside town just over an hour away from Winnipeg. It is famed for its delicious walleye and Icelandic culture. It is located on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, the 12th largest lake in the world. In the hot, sunny Manitoba summer, Gimli takes on the feel of a seaside resort town complete with an impressive array of sandy beaches, a bustling harbour, and a wide array of restaurants.

Downtown Gimli is dominated by the beach front Lakeside Resort and Conference centre and the harbour. The harbour breakwater is a popular fishing spot for locals and visitors alike while more adventurous visitors may book trips with charter boats.

Tourism

Tourist activities in Gimli centre around the enormous Lake Winnipeg. The lake is a shallow lake formed by glacial movement during the ice ages. This provides a unique beach experience where sand bars allow wading significant distances into the lake. Gimli hosts a large and publicly maintained sandy beach with important amenities located within minutes walking distance of the beach itself. Additional, more secluded beaches, are located within driving distance. The Hecla-Grindstone provincial park is located approximately one hour by car north of Gimli. Lake Winnipeg hosts a commercial as well as a robust recreational fishery. Opportunities for conference attendees to fish include fishing from shore on the breakwater of the marina, driving to another local hot spot, or making a boat trip out of it with a local charter operator. Information on angling licenses, fees, and other regulations governing fishing in Manitoba can be found here.
